What the SP Role Demands of You
The Superintendent Pharmacist bears ultimate legal and professional responsibility for the pharmacy at all times — including outside business hours. Our training is being built around every dimension of that responsibility.
As SP, you are legally responsible for ensuring your pharmacy meets the GPhC's Standards for Registered Pharmacies at all times — including when you are not on site. The new 2022 Order and draft 2025 standards significantly expand SP accountability across governance, documentation and patient safety.
SOPs must be documented, version-controlled and signed by the SP. Clinical governance systems must be functional, not just on paper. Inspectors look for evidence of a genuine learning culture — incident reporting, reflective practice and active quality improvement.
GPhC inspections — both announced and unannounced — assess 18 core patient safety standards. The SP is held accountable for outcomes whether or not they are present. The 2026 framework places greater emphasis on culture, safeguarding, digital governance and high-risk prescribing oversight.
The SP is responsible for monitoring, assessing and overseeing the training and competency of all pharmacy staff in line with GPhC requirements and the Code of Ethics — across both clinical and operational roles.
Responsibility for safe purchase, receipt, storage, sale and supply of all medicines — including controlled drugs, temperature monitoring, expiry management and the maintenance of accurate pharmacy and prescription records at all times.
For SPs overseeing private clinics or multiple pharmacy sites, additional requirements apply — including private prescribing records, clinical governance for each service offered, patient safety processes and ensuring each site meets GPhC standards independently.
